![]() Norway itself was ill-prepared for the Blitzkrieg and its last troops surrendered on the 10 th of June. Britain and France attempted invasions as well, to open up another front of the war – which ultimately failed as these troops were redirected to the (failed) defence of France. In early April of 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Norway under the pretence of protecting it from British and French ‘interference’. Britain, too, began pressuring Norway to take a side. Maritime incidents inside Norwegian waters put its neutrality into doubt, as far as the Nazis were concerned. ![]() It began rearmament just before war broke out, at the pleas of its military officials. But as the tense months dragged on, conflict with the new Reich became inevitable. ![]() Offers from Nazi Germany in early 1939 of a non-aggression pact were rejected to maintain this stance. It had maintained neutrality during the First World War, and pursued pacifism through much of the post-war years. Let’s take a look at each single-player campaign, and piece them together with what really happened. I took the liberty of tackling such controversy two years ago, and I’m ready to do it again. And, also like last time, it’s mostly founded on gamer butthurt. Much like Battlefield 1, controversy surrounding Battlefield V’s historical accuracy erupted nearly immediately. WW2 is cool again, much to the groaning of players old enough to remember when games set in the conflict were everywhere. This week, Battlefield V bought us back to the franchise’s beginnings. Vietnam, modern warfare, a brief return to its roots with Battlefield 1943 in 2009, the First World War, and even the near future of 2142. Over the years, the franchise has jumped from place to place. 2002’s Battlefield 1942 made playing through the war’s epic battles possible, on a scale that hadn’t been seen before. They date back to (at least) Castle Wolfenstein in 1981. Games are absolutely no stranger to the Second World War. Entertainment doesn’t shy away from it either, which is where our good friend video games comes in. Countless books, documentaries, movies, and TV programs have catalogued the most devastating war in history in ways that no other period of history can boast. The Second World War is probably the most documented war in history.

This set-up is particularly useful in early stages of gameplay, “when DeepNash knows little about its opponent’s pieces,” making predictions “difficult, if not impossible,” the authors said. Like a baby, it has a blank slate, of sorts, to learn. Here, the AI isn’t trying to precisely model its opponent’s behavior. In Statego, this brings about a zero-sum game: any gain a player makes results in a loss for their opponent.īecause of Stratego’s complexity, DeepNash took a model-free approach to their algorithm. Put simply, in each game, players can tap into a set of strategies followed by everyone, so that no single player gains anything by changing their own strategy. A pioneer in game theory, Nash won the Nobel Prize for his work for the Nash equilibrium. Instead, the magic touch for DeepNash came from the mathematician John Nash, portrayed in the film A Beautiful Mind. Dubbed the Monte Carlo tree search, a “stalwart approach to AI-based gaming,” the technique plots out potential routes-like branches on a tree-that could result in victory. Stratego’s complexity means that the usual strategy for searching gameplay moves is out of the question. The challenge is “what excited us,” he said. “The sheer complexity of the number of possible outcomes in Stratego means algorithms that perform well on perfect-information games, and even those that work for poker, don’t work,” said study author Dr. ![]() Stratego’s game tree, the sum of all potential moves in the game, totals a staggering 10 535. Stratego has over 10 66 possible starting positions-far more than all the stars in the universe. The number of potential game plays is mind-blowing. But that strategy faltered for Stratego, largely because of the length of game, which unlike poker, normally encompasses hundreds of moves. Stratego, in contrast, has a touch of Texas Hold ’em, a poker game DeepMind previously conquered with an algorithm. Even the most successful game-play algorithms, such as AlphaGo and AlphaZero, rely on complete information. This level of uncertainty is partly why Stratego has stumped AI for ages. Players must “balance all possible outcomes” any time they make a decision, the authors explained. Unlike chess or Go, in which each piece and movement is in view, Stratego is a game with limited information. Stratego is especially challenging for AI because players can’t see the location of their opponents’ pieces, both during initial setup and throughout gameplay. The goal is to eliminate the opposition and capture their flag. Each piece has a different name and numerical rank, such as “marshal,” “general,” “scout,” or “spy.” Higher ranking pieces can capture lower ones. Each side has 40 pieces they can place at any position on the board. The game is essentially capture the flag. In terms of complexity, Stratego is a completely different beast compared to chess, Go, or poker-all games that AI has previously mastered. As AI gains more flexible reasoning, becomes more generalized, and learns to navigate social situations, it may also spark insights into our own brains’ neural processes and cognition. Noam Brown at Meta AI, who wasn’t involved in the research.ĭeepNash’s triumph comes hot on the heels of another AI advance this month, where an algorithm learned to play Diplomacy-a game that requires negotiation and cooperation to win. “If you’re making a self-driving car, you don’t want to assume that all the other drivers on the road are perfectly rational, and going to behave optimally,” said Dr. ![]() AI systems that can easily maneuver the randomness of our world and adjust their “behavior” accordingly could one day handle real-world problems with limited information, such as optimizing traffic flow to reduce travel time and (hopefully) quenching road rage as self-driving cars become ever more present. With DeepNash, “game-playing artificial intelligence (AI) systems have advanced to a new frontier.” “Unlike chess and Go, Stratego is a game of imperfect information: players cannot directly observe the identities of their opponent’s pieces,” DeepMind wrote in a blog post. A notoriously difficult game for AI, Stratego requires multiple strengths of human wit: long-term thinking, bluffing, and strategizing, all without knowing your opponent’s pieces on the board. The result, DeepNash, toppled human experts in a highly strategic board game called Stratego. ![]() The trick was to interweave game theory into an algorithmic strategy loosely based on the human brain called deep reinforcement learning. Yet to navigate our unpredictable world, it needs to learn to make choices with imperfect information-as we do every single day.ĭeepMind just took a stab at solving this conundrum. ![]() Now, if you know a party starts at 8pm but tell your nemesis it starts at 9pm because you want them to look foolish, you are supplying them with disinformation. Our first definition of this word gives one major reason why a person or group might want to spread wrong information, but there are many other nefarious motivations lurking behind the creation of disinformation. So, disinformation is misinformation that is knowingly (intentionally) spread. You’ll notice that misinform, like misinformation, also makes no mention of why this wrong information is being spread around, only that it is.ĭisinformation means “false information, as about a country’s military strength or plans, disseminated by a government or intelligence agency in a hostile act of tactical political subversion.” It is also used more generally to mean “deliberately misleading or biased information manipulated narrative or facts propaganda.” Misinformation is, of course, related to the verb misinform, which means “to give wrong or misleading information to” and is first recorded around 1350–1400. Misinformation is first recorded in the late 1500s, and combines information with the prefix mis–, meaning “wrong” or “mistaken.” Mistake, misspelling, and misunderstanding are some examples of other common words besides misinformation that use mis– to mean “wrong.” Misinformation was top of mind that year, with governments, businesses, and the broader culture grappling with how to stop dangerous misinformation-which, if deliberately weaponized, can become disinformation. It is problems like these that motivated us to pick misinformation as our Word of the Year in 2018. And in part because of such frequent incidents, it is a hot topic of debate if big tech companies like Facebook and Google should be responsible for stopping the spread of misinformation-or even if they even can without violating the First Amendment freedom of speech rights of their users. On social media, users have-as just one tiny instance-shared stories about dolphins and swans swimming in the canals of Venice without checking if those stories are true (they weren’t). Today, misinformation spreads very easily thanks to technology. ![]() Misinformation doesn’t care about intent, and so is simply a term for any kind of wrong or false information. But don’t fear: we’re not calling the fact police on you! The key, here, is that you unwittingly spread false information around you didn’t mean to, or even might have thought the information was true. For example, say a party starts at 8pm, but you forget or misread the invitation and tell your friends it starts at 9pm, you are supplying them with misinformation. If you are spreading around information that is wrong but you don’t know it is wrong, then you are, well, technically, spreading misinformation.Īnd when we say misinformation is an everyday thing, we mean it. We tell our friends something we heard on TV or saw on social media that wasn’t really true. We human beings-news flash-are not perfect. The spread of misinformation happens often in our everyday lives. Misinformation is “false information that is spread, regardless of intent to mislead.” Put a flag in the second half of this definition it will be important later. Let’s get the facts on misinformation vs. But behind that one letter hides the critical distinction between these confusable words: intent. These two words, so often used interchangeably, are merely one letter apart. Now more than ever, we are experiencing the spread of two forms of wrong information: misinformation and disinformation. Like a virus, wrong information can spread, causing what’s been called an infodemic. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. It can be a literal life-saver-when it’s true. ![]() Schedule 1 day in advance by 4:00 PM Pacific Standard Time. Be sure to choose your Licensing Authority/Sponsor name from the drop-down menu.
